(And yes, this is the week that Lent stops being novel and becomes just plain hard…)
Monday, March 13 – John Chapter 13. Jesus loves his friends by serving them. He does this from a firm understanding of who He is in God. He’s not trying to convince them of anything. He just loves them.
Prayer ideas: Clarity about who you are in God. Vision for service – to see what people need and what God is calling you to do in response to that need. Pure motives. Capacity obey Jesus’ new commandment.
Tuesday, March 14 – John Chapter 14. Jesus makes what seems like the most impossible demand (Don’t let your hearts be troubled), and an even more unimaginable promise (ask anything in my name and I will do it). What do we do with this?
Prayer ideas: For Jesus to settle your heart. For boldness (and promptings) to ask Him for everything we need. Conversational freedom as we talk to God. To see and do the greater works he has in store for you.
Wednesday, March 15 – John Chapter 15. A violent and yet reassuring chapter in this Gospel! Branches are pruned or chopped off, some get thrown in the fire, and we don’t control any of that. What we control is staying close to Jesus through it all. Also? The world will hate you. What a deal!
Prayer ideas: Steadfast confidence, faith & endurance. A Holy knowledge that it’s worth it. To abide more and more in Jesus – for him to become your safe place.
Thursday, March 16 – John Chapter 16. The Holy Spirit is coming – the Advocate, Comforter, Encourager, Counselor. Jesus describes how the Holy Spirit will make things better after he leaves – “When the Spirit of Truth comes, He will guide you in all Truth.”
Prayer ideas: Infilling of the Holy Spirit. To see how He advocates for you. For comfort, encouragement, and wise counsel. For truth. For courage to ask in Jesus’ name and receive abundant joy.
Friday, March 17 – John Chapter 17. Jesus prays, asking His Father to be glorified in Him. To glorify God means to complete your assignment – to do the things He has called, chosen, appointed, and anointed you to do. (New Spirit Filled Life Bible, p. 1370) He also prays for our protection
Prayer ideas: That God be glorified in you. For strength when your faith causes interpersonal difficulties. For confidence that not one will be lost.
Saturday, March 18 – John Chapter 18. Jesus is betrayed by both Judas and Peter.
Prayer ideas: For wisdom in the aftermath of betrayal. Courage in the face of accusation. Ability to describe the Kingdom of God in non-political terms.
Sunday, March 19 – John Chapter 19. The Jews call for Jesus to be crucified even though crucifixion was despised and therefore not practiced by them. This was a Roman custom they found disgusting. And yet here they are, crying, “Crucify him!” It’s astonishing what we can become when we feel our power or position threatened.
Prayer ideas: For freedom from the lies of the enemy. Ability to recognize, believe, and walk in the authority we have in Jesus.
What do I see here that I want to pray for myself?
What do I see here that I want to pray for specific people in my life?
What do I see here that everyone needs, that I want to pray for all of us?
